NYSED Requirements for Certificate Registration

  • NYSED requires instructional staff with Permanent or Professional Classroom Teaching or Educational Leadership certifications to “register” their certificate every five years. These requirements do not apply to School Counselors, School Psychologists, or School Social Workers.

Click here for an official NYSED chart with additional information.

To complete the registration process, you must log into the NY.gov “portal” and navigate to the NYSED TEACH “application”: https://my.ny.gov/

Please note that this is the same portal that NYS residents also use to access their DMV license and registration renewal, NY “State of Health”, and various 529 programs. It is possible that you may have multiple NY.gov accounts. Also note that all support for this site is provided directly by NYS via their “self-service” links. Unfortunately, NWCSD cannot provide any troubleshooting for the NY.gov site.

Once you are “in” the TEACH application, screenshots available here, you will see an option to “view or change [your] registration status.” Registration is good for five years (although it does appear that NYSED may have extended some certificate holder’s registration by one year due to the COVID pandemic). You will be able to re-register up to six months out from your due date. You may wish to get into the habit of logging in annually and then set a calendar reminder as the due date approaches.

Note about "CTLE Language Acquisition Requirement Exemption": One of the registration prompts directs the user to report the number of years that they were "employed by an applicable school with an approved exemption for the CTLE language acquisition requirement." See screenshot:

The site provides a link to the CR Part 154 waiver status for each NYS public school district. Users should consult that list to confirm our waiver status for the years in question. Note: if the list is not updated to the most recent school year, please contact the Department for our current status.
