Superintendent Notices

Niagara Wheatfield Families,

First and foremost, I hope this communication finds you and your loved ones doing well in this very difficult time.  The health and safety of students and school community continue to be our number one priority during this coronavirus pandemic.

We continue to provide food for our students through our grab and go food service program.  I am so incredibly proud of the dedication of our staff who are making this happen for our families.  Next week our food service will occur on Monday, April 6, Wednesday, April 8, and Thursday, April 9. The following week we will be back to Monday, Wednesday, Friday food service.  As a reminder our pickup locations are the High School and Tuscarora Elementary School between the hours of 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.

Our next packet pickup will begin next week and you will be receiving specific directions from your building principals on the pickup process.  At the middle school and high school levels there will be multiple pickup days due to the large number of students.

Next week I expect some important decisions will be made, which shall impact our continuity of learning plans moving forward.  On Monday, April 6 the Board of Regents is scheduled to meet, and there should be guidance and expectations on many items, including whether or not there will be Regents exams this year.  Also, Governor Cuomo’s current executive order has schools closed for students through April 14. If there is a pattern to the decision making, we could expect an update on Friday, April 10.

Please understand there is a wide spectrum of learners and expectations for the type of learning that should take place during this pandemic.  We have families who are directly impacted by the coronavirus, families who are struggling more than ever to make ends meet financially, and families who have members deemed essential and are on the front lines.  We also understand the gaps that exist in both technology device access and internet access within our District.

So as far as future planning is concerned, we are preparing for many different scenarios that may unfold, and trying to determine the way each may impact the end of the 2019-2020 school year.  Our teachers of grades 4-12 have received training in Google Classroom, and this is the primary on-line communication tool that should be utilized. Based on the decisions that come next week, we will assess how to further use technology and other existing resources to provide direct and even new instruction.  For some additional information please check out the Important Messages pop-up on our District website.

I know it is hard to believe, but we are only completing week 3 of our new normal.  Our priorities will continue to be safety, food service. and continuity of learning.  Please continue to adhere to all of the social distancing guidelines, while doing your best to care for and stay connected with family and friends.

Stay safe and be well,

Daniel G. Ljiljanich

Superintendent

Niagara Wheatfield Families,

Niagara County has issued a state of emergency and the Niagara County Health Department has recommended all schools (Pre-K through 12) close for students, effective Monday, March 16 and until further notice.  Therefore, school will be closed for students beginning Monday, March 16, and until further notice. Districts will reassess student attendance weekly. There will be no extra-curricular activities, community events, or community education classes until further notice.

Staff will report on Monday, March 16 to their regularly assigned building, with the exception of bus drivers and bus attendants.

Also, in the coming days the District will be sending out information related to academic resources, and food service for those who receive free or reduced meals.  Finally, all staff are asked to check their email later tonight for additional information pertinent to their respective jobs in the District.

The District will continue to use the Blackboard Connect system and our District website to share information with families.

Clearly, these are unprecedented times, but we will get through this by working together as a school community. I know you will do your part by taking care of family and friends, and by being good neighbors.

Thank you,

Mr. Ljiljanich

Superintendent

Niagara Wheatfield Families,

On Friday, March 13, 2020 a collaborative planning meeting was held with the Niagara County Health Department, Niagara County Emergency Services, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, and Orleans/Niagara BOCES Superintendents.

Based on the recommendations from the meeting we will be cancelling all school-sponsored travel outside of Western New York. The ban on travel applies to all students and staff and will continue until further notice.

Also, effective Monday, March 16, 2020 we are suspending all non-essential public gatherings that include more than 50 people. Non-essential gatherings include, but are not limited to, concerts, spectators at sporting events, and other public forums. Essential school-related functions such as food service, regularly scheduled classes, transportation services and study halls will continue as normal.

The Niagara County Health Department also requested that you direct specific health concerns to the County Health Department.

Again, the circumstances surrounding the coronavirus are rapidly changing and we will do our best to update you with new information in a timely fashion.

Sincerely,

Daniel G. Ljiljanich
