    English Language Arts Teachers
    This year, we continue using our program that works to enhance individual student strengths and reinforces the core skills of reading strategies, vocabulary in the context, and literary analysis.  In alignment with the New York State ELA Core Curriculum, our students:
    -read a true balance of informational and literary texts.
    -build knowledge about the world through text, rather than through the teacher or activities.
    -read the central, grade appropriate text around which instruction is centered.  Time and space is created in the curriculum for close reading.
    -engage in rich and rigorous evidence-based conversations about text.
    -respond to writing tasks that emphasize the use of evidence from sources to inform or make an argument.
    -constantly build the transferable vocabulary they need to access grade level complex texts. 
    The curriculum spirals from grade 6 up through grade 8.  The skills and topics that our department focuses on are as follows:
    Plot, Conflict, Setting
    Analyzing Character and Point-of-View
    Mood, Tone, Style, and Voice
    Appreciating Poetry
    Myths, Legends and Tales
    Biography, Autobiography, History, Culture and the Author
    Facts and Information
    Argument and Persuasion
